Dogs in Our Foster Care Program

The dogs listed below are in our foster program. The foster home provides a transition period between life in the animal shelter and the new, permanent home. The dogs are given the opportunity to learn any needed social skills and to receive the much needed love, shelter, and medical care they deserve. Are you interested in fostering? Click here to learn more.

We have an increased need for more foster homes due to the foreclosure crisis. Click here to read more.

Contact us for more information on any of these dogs: adopt@NorCalGSPrescue.com or (408) 402-2092

Moose - Are you ready for a dog that is polite and friendly? Got over his puppy behavior a few years back? If you have a busy life and/or work full-time, Moose is the kind of dog that you can enjoy without him demanding all of your time. He's an 8 year old male GSP who is happy to be an only dog but loves other dogs as well. Moose is great with people and kids of all ages. He likes walks and hikes, but can also kick back and take it easy. This boy is well-trained - he knows how to use the doggie door and has learned sit, heel, down, back it up, wait, and out! He only chases cats if they run, otherwise he gets along fine with them. Come meet Moose, you'll see what a sweetheart he is!

Do you work full-time? Buster is accustomed to being inside the home with a couple of canine buddies while his foster folks are at work. Since he's an older dog, he doesn't destroy things while they're away and can safely be left inside. He's house trained, crate trained and has good basic manners. He even knows "Shake!" Perfect for the busy person, he only requires a 10 or 15 minute walk each day and then he's happy to relax at your feet. Come meet this sweet fellow!  Children 6 and up.

Derby is great at giving love, and he loves to be cuddled and spoiled. This gentleman doesn't need long walks, but likes to get outside for a bit of exercise. He's been on a diet and exercise regimen in his foster home, and it shows! Derby is great with people and dogs, and would do equally well with another dog or as an only dog. He'd love to catch a cat if he could, but would do fine with agile or dog-savvy cats.  Children 6 and up.

Junebug is a sweet 4 month old GSP mix puppy. GSP? English Pointer? Some of each? She is settling in to her foster home after a rough time in the shelter – we were told that she had distemper. After a number of days in isolation at the vet, her various tests came back negative for distemper (although it is possible that she is an asymptomatic carrier), and she is now in quarantine at her foster home. We’ll be watching her closely to see if she develops any other symptoms, but otherwise she’ll be spayed in early June and be ready for adoption after that.

In addition to our standard requirements, we will adopt Junebug only to families that are experienced with high energy breeds. We will also only place her in a home in Northern California. Gentle, respectful children in this home should be 8+ years old. If you are interested in Junebug and meet the above criteria, please fill out our Adoption Questionnaire. Our goal is to find the best match for both the puppy and the adoptive family. Applications will continue to be reviewed until a match is found.

Due to the high level of interest, please do not call us regarding Junebug. Only online applications will be considered.

Otto is a 13 month old male GSP male who acts much more like a puppy! He needs training and house manners. He is eager to learn and to please and will do best with an experienced GSP lover. His foster family tells us, “He is super with other dogs and is very gentle in a dangerous and wild sort of way. This will be the dog someone refers to as "The best dog I ever owned".” Children 6 and up, has not been tested with cats.

Shasta is a 6 year old female GSP who was surrendered to the shelter because of a divorce.  She lived with children originally and is being fostered with young children – and she loves to play with children!  Shasta gets along well with other dogs, but likes to chase and corner cats.  Her foster family tells us, “She is a wonderful dog.  My kids just love her.  They can play with her for hours.  Shasta and my GSP Zoe are like sisters and just love each other.  She will make a great addition to anyone’s family.”

Boomer is a handsome 8 year old male GSP who's a real sweetheart. He's playful, knows how to fetch, is very good on the leash and does well with off-leash recall. Boomer loves to ride in the truck, and has been found curled up asleep in the front seat or hanging out in the back of the truck, preferably on top of the tool box! He's in his glory when he gets to go along, and he's been to work with his foster dad. Boomer gets along well with other dogs, no cats please. Children 6 and up. He'll make a wonderful family friend!

Duante is an 11 year old male GSP who is VERY friendly, very smart and sweet. The sad part - his owner dropped him off at the shelter because Duante was getting depressed after his sibling died recently. The happy part - Duante is safely in his foster home where he loves to play fetch and be petted. He's food and praise motivated, knows sit, shake, and pee pee, and sleeps well in his crate at night. He loves to play "feed the chickens" with the other dogs in his foster home, and gets along fabulously with them. If you'd like a great family dog that doesn't require tons of attention but will soak it up when you have time to give it, come meet Duante.  Children 6 and up.

MARYSVILLE PUPS

These pups are approximately 6 months old and were abandoned at the Marysville shelter. We believe they are mostly GSP but may have something else mixed in because three are black and white ticked, coloration that is not typical for GSPs in California. Two of their littermates succumbed to parvo at the shelter. They have also had mange, an easily treated non-contagious skin condition where the hair falls out. Two other littermates have already been adopted!

In addition to our standard requirements, we will adopt these puppies only to families that are experienced with high energy breeds. We will also only place them in homes in Northern California. Gentle, respectful children in these homes should be 8+ years old. If you are interested in these puppies and meet the above criteria, please fill out our Adoption Questionnaire. There will be a multiple-phase screening process. Our goal is to find the best match for both the puppy and the adoptive family. Applications will continue to be reviewed until all the puppies are matched with adoptive families.

Due to the high level of interest, please do not call us regarding the puppies. Only online applications will be considered.

Audi has turned out to be quite the handsome fellow. He’s wonderful in the yard, and does about the normal amount of puppy chewing indoors! He loves to come up to you and sit, waiting for you to throw the ball. Liebe as her name states, is a real love. She can be more mischievous than Audi and often eggs him on. She loves to play fetch, over and over and over again!

Turbo is a total pacifist and loving sweetheart. He's a happy ol' boy and just wants to be friends with everyone. This gentleman is about 50 pounds but needs to regain some weight. The vet estimates him to be about 13 and has advised us against neutering him due to his age. He came into rescue quite ill, and now he is doing so well! He plays fetch and catch with himself when excited. He is a very happy and affectionate dog. His energy has returned with the good care he is receiving, and he's the first of the GSPs in his home ready for a walk in the morning! Turbo gets along well with other dogs and kids of all ages.

Piero (also known as Homer) is a 7 year old neutered male GSP who is very handsome and learns quickly - he already knows how to use the doggie door! He is loving with people and dogs that he knows. He has demonstrated some dog reactivity with dogs he does not know, and is working on this in foster care. Piero has a strong prey drive and needs a home without cats. He'll do best in a home with a female dog or as an only dog.  Children 6 and up.

Hendrix is a wonderful special-needs puppy who was abandoned at 4 weeks by a back-yard breeder. He came into rescue quite small for his age and unable to stand on his rear legs or walk. Hendrix was evaluated by our specialist, who determined that Hendrix has spina bifida, a condition where the tube surrounding the spinal cord did not fully close during pre-natal development. It is not a condition that surgery can repair. This called for some tough decisions, and we decided that rather than just give up on Hendrix, we would give him every chance to make improvement and find just the right forever home for him.

Hendrix has been making great progress in his foster home! While it's unlikely that he'll walk normally, he has learned to stand up to eat, and gets himself around the house very well. He is gradually making improvements in his bowel and bladder control. Hendrix has been receiving rehabilitative therapy to help him develop strength and coordination. He's attending puppy class, and has learned sit, watch, touch, stay, leave it, take it, drop it, and is working on down and other commands. He is crate-trained.

When you meet Hendrix, you will fall in love with him. Despite his physical problems, he's good-natured, very affectionate, full of playful puppy energy, and incredibly intelligent and eager to learn. He loves kids, people, and dogs of all sizes. He'll do best in a home with another playful dog.

If you are prepared to help Hendrix reach his full potential, please fill out our Adoption Questionnaire. In addition to our standard requirements, we prefer a person or family that is experienced with high energy breeds and lives in Northern California. Gentle, respectful children should be 8+ years old. Our goal is to find the best match for both Hendrix and the adoptive family.

Please help us continue to fund Hendrix's therapy while we search for an adoptive home.
