Dogs in Our Foster Care Program

The dogs listed below are in our foster program. The foster home provides a transition period between life in the animal shelter and the new, permanent home. The dogs are given the opportunity to learn any needed social skills and to receive the much needed love, shelter, and medical care they deserve.

If you would like more information on any of the dogs in our foster program, begin by completing our adoption questionnaire and reading about our Adoption Process.  The adoption questionnaire is the first step in our adoption process, whether you are interested in a particular foster dog or are just beginning to explore the option of adopting a rescued GSP.

Not sure if you are ready to adopt?  Perhaps you are interested in fostering?  While we always need foster homes, the need is even more acute because of the foreclosure crisis and general economic situation.  Click here to learn more about becoming a foster home.  Foster homes receive priority in adopting their foster dog.

Not able to foster but want to help one of our wonderful foster dogs? It's easy, click here to find out more about our Sponsorship Program and other ways you can help!

Jolie is quite the active, young puppy with the typical energy level of 1-year-old.   She was tagged as “aggressive” at the shelter and things were not looking promising for her.  So she came into rescue and there it’s been discovered that she is not aggressive or even dominant at all – she is, in fact, a sweetheart who loves to play with other dogs only without knowing the rules.  Now that she is being socialized and getting to play with dogs, she is learning how to control her rambunctiousness around them and that “I am done playing with you now” means “back off, sister!”  It appears that she was an outside dog and left alone all day as she is adapting quickly to indoor living and is enjoying hanging out with her foster people.   Jolie is learning to listen to people now that someone is actually paying attention to her and is picking up good-dog skills, including walking nicely on a leash.  She is small (42 lbs) and quiet with GSP hobbies; namely, bird- and squirrel-watching.  Jolie will be the perfect pet for someone who can give this neglected little girl the attention she should have had all along.

Dino is a beautiful 6 to 7-year-old, neutered male GSP.  He is a 62#, lanky, super-sweet boy with a very soft mouth.  Because  Dino is completely blind, the shelter environment was a little overwhelming for him and he came into rescue.  Dino has been to the eye specialist and was diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy, an inherited degenerative condition, and has cataracts forming on both his eyes.  He is not in any pain now and may need eye drops in the future. Since blindness from PRA progresses slowly, he has had time to adjust and his other senses have sharpened enabling him to adapt to his sightless world.  He doesn’t even seem to notice that he can’t see and in three days, he has mastered the layout in his foster home including the stairs, figured out the doggy door on his own and is able to let himself in and out of the house without any assistance.   He LOVES walks, and could even be a jogging partner as long as you can steer him clear of obstacles.  He is good with other dogs and even ignored the cat.  This wonderful boy is very exceptional; incredibly smart, gentle, patient and doesn’t chew shoes!   Dino will be able to lead a normal, happy life despite his vision and just needs a “seeing-eye person” to help him along.

Sierra is a petite (36 lbs), energetic, young lady who was found as a stray and ended up in a shelter.  She is happy being out of the shelter and is now enjoying a good romp with her foster sister, chasing after tennis balls and playing tug.  She is getting used to the routine at her foster home and has learned to “take care of business” outside and mastered the doggy door. Sierra is most definitely a water dog and can be found playing or sometimes just sitting in the water.   This smart, active 1-year-old needs a family that can provide plenty of mental and physical exercise.

Scout

Scout is a charming, 7-year-old  who is happy to find himself out of the shelter and into a foster home.  He LOVES tennis balls and will fetch them, bring them back to you and do it all over again.  When he’s not fetching tennis balls, he’s carrying one around. . . maybe in the hope of a quick “pick-up” game!  Sadly, he has been debarked, but is very well-behaved. He is an active guy, wants to be loved and is very loving in return.  What would make him deliriously happy would be to find himself a permanent new home.

Quincy is a 7-year-old, 55-lbs sweet GSP that was picked up as a stray.  She is calm and affectionate and loves to snuggle with her humans.  She is house-trained, rides very well in the car and happily sleeps in her crate.  She is learning to use a doggy door and to walk nicely on a leash.   She likes other dogs, but has a take-charge attitude and any dogs in her future home will not mind her bossiness.   Quincy is adapting quickly to the finer things in life such as the couch, plenty of dog toys and of course, lots of love.  She is looking for a forever family that can provide these things in spades!

Jewel is a stunning, petite 35 lb, young  (1 year-old) girl with an enthusiastic outlook on life.  Her foster home described her as a “fun dog with a great personality.”  She was dumped at the shelter by her original owner because she wouldn’t hunt.  Well, hunting is work and Jewel is all about having fun.  She loves to play and will try to engage just about anything or anyone in her quest for a game.  She is great with both kids and cats, and likes other dogs.  She is very quiet and the only sound you hear is her tail thwacking on the wall, the couch, the crate, etc.  She points like a pro, has a soft mouth and a keen interest in birds.   She doesn’t whine, try to escape or jump on the furniture and loves to ride in the car.  She is a smart dog and already has several commands under belt: ‘heel’, ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘here’.  This sweet, lovely girl is very obedient and is house- and crate-trained.   Jewel likes to stay busy and will thrive in a home that can provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation.

Case is a 6 year old neutered male whose world got turned upside down when he was left at the shelter, and he needs some time to adjust to what has happened.  He’s a little uncertain right now, afraid of some noises, and a bit clingy.  We’re recommending that any children in the home be 13 or older.

Case is a handsome fellow who likes to go for rides in the car – in fact, he’ll hang around the car looking hopeful!  He’s house-trained, behaves nicely in the house, and enjoys running around outside with the two female dogs in his foster home.

The Great Senior Pooch (GSP) Fund!

We need your help!  We need people like you who have a soft spot for the oldies, who want to help older GSPs live out their days in comfort and see to it they get the medical care they deserve.  Their lives may not have been that great, but gosh darn, the rest of their lives will be!

Too often, older dogs are dumped at the shelter for reasons like “can't hunt” or “too old" or "sick.”  These dogs may remain in foster care much longer than younger dogs, and we want to provide them with the best of care.  To do that, we need money.  Yes, your money.  Won't you feel good knowing you made a difference?  While others were helping cute little puppies, you reached out to make a senior dog's life worth living?  That your donation provided much needed medication or labwork or surgery?

Support the Great Senior Pooch (GSP) Fund!

Become a Great Senior Pooch funder!  Click today to donate via PayPal or by mail to PO Box 933, Menlo Park, CA 94026.

Matching funds:  Now through September 30th, 2010, we have the opportunity to have your donation matched by some special donors, our Great Supporting People (some of whom fall into the “mature” category themselves!).  Your donation will be matched dollar for dollar, up to a $10,000 maximum. Donate today to really make your money work!

Mercy is a lady of a certain age (she’s about 12) looking for a home of her own.   This 60 pound sweetheart would love to join you in your routine.  Since she’s on the mature side, she’d prefer a home without too many stairs.  Mercy enjoys being with her people and gets along well with other dogs.

Update 04-18-10 - Mercy had stopped eating and was becoming more and more lethargic every day. Her foster home took her to the vet where she was diagnosed with Pyometra (a disease of the uterus) that resulted in emergency spay surgery. When she first came into rescue, the vet advised us that undergoing a spay might be too risky for her due to her age.  But now we had no choice, she would have died without the surgery.  Luckily for Mercy, all went well, and to be on the safe side she stayed overnight at the vet's for observation. Her vet bill was over $1,300 - please help us help her by donating to Mercy's medical fund - any amount is greatly appreciated!

Robin is an older gal with spunk.  We’re guessing she’s in the 9 or 10 year old range.  She’s about 56 pounds and has some wear-and-tear on her, and now she’s in search of a warm and friendly home that wants to spoil her.  She’s crate-trained and already knows some commands.

Update 6-1-10. Robin had a lump on her elbow that was originally thought to be a hygroma, but with further evaluation/aspiration it was identified as a soft-tissue sarcoma.  These type of tumor tend to enlarge, but fortunately don’t usually metastasize (spread).  The elbow is a tricky location to make sure all of the tumor is removed.  Robin underwent  surgery in March where it was successfully removed.  She needed a second trip to the vet to clean and restitch the wound, and now she is fully healed and ready to meet potential adopters.  She's back to enjoying walks and some good couch time.  Please help us pay for Robin's care (over $1000), donate to her Medical Fund today.  Every dollar helps!

Bowdie is an 8 year old dude looking for love.  He sure loves attention and wants to be wherever the people are.  It doesn’t appear that he’s had much training but he’s very responsive to people.  Bowdie views most objects as toys and challenges, and gives them a good working over!  He enjoys the outdoors, playing with other dogs, and playing catch.

Bowdie is a good candidate for the working family – he enjoys being outside during the day, is well-mannered on the leash, and doesn’t require as much exercise as a younger GSP.  His foster mom says, "He is a GREAT companion and extremely mellow. He doesn't jump or lick." He’s on the smaller side for a male at around 55 pounds.  Maybe you are the family he’s been looking for?

Axel is a 2 to 3 year-old energetic young male GSP!  We don’t know much about his past, but we are looking for the right person or family for his future.

Him: Axel loves playing ball, running, and most of all, being with you.  He’s handsome and athletic.  He’s working toward a happier life with his human(s) as he is asocial towards other dogs.

You:  You will have a firm and loving approach, an active lifestyle without a lot of chaos, and be able to follow through with recommendations about his behavior.  Your home will have adults or adults and teenager, and no other pets.  You won’t feel that you are depriving Axel because he’s not able to go to the dog park – you’d rather take him for a run or toss the ball for him in your yard.

Gabe is a solid liver colored GSP surrendered to the shelter by his owner. He told shelter staff he uses his dogs for field trials and Gabe is not able to hunt the length of time for trials. He said he is good around children, very obedient, and could hunt, just not with the intensity of a field trial dog. Gabe was selected for the Pups On Parole program at the California Correctional Center in the hope of finding him just the right family. A family who will allow him to become a family member and maybe a part time hunting dog. Gabe is very intelligent, gentle and affectionate, his trainer has found him to be easily trained.

Gabe is current on vaccinations, heart worm negative and will be neutered and micro chipped prior to adoption. If you think this great guy could become a important part of your family, he is waiting for you to e-mail or call the Lassen Humane Society at (530) 257-4555.

Brownie

brownie

Sweet, yummy, delicious! That’s me, Brownie, a 6 year old altered male German Shorthaired Pointer. I am looking for an owner that has experience with my breed. I’m a playful, energetic fellow that’s looking for his forever home. I get along with other dogs when supervised and children in their teens. I should not live with cats as I will chase them. I know some of my commands, such as “sit” and “down”, but will still need to enroll in mandatory training. My energy level is described as “high”, so I will need a house with a yard and strong owners willing to give me LOTS of daily exercise. I also need more practice walking well on leash. I bet this Brownie can tempt you! Do I sound like a possible match? If so, ask for me by name or ID#A326408.

If you want to see my video, visit my page on the PHS&SPCA website.

Brownie is part of TAILS!
PHS/SPCA and the Sheriff’s Office partnered during the spring of 2009 to developTAILS (Transitioning Animals Into Loving Situations).

Please contact the shelter to find out when Brownie graduates.

For more information about Brownie, call Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA at (650) 340-7022 and reference Pet ID #A326408.

Akira

Akira

Courtesy posting for Tuolumne County Humane Society

Akira is a beautiful female dog, believed to be a GSP/Catahoula mix. She is about 1 1/2 years old. She knows how to sit on command, and is working on learning "down." She loves cookies and getting attention. She's great with people, however she would like to be the only dog in your life. She loves to run, play and have a good time whenever possible!

Akira is an outgoing girl with lots of love to give! All she wants is out of the shelter (she's been there since November!) and a family and home to call her own.

If you are interested in Akira, please contact the Humane Society of Tuolumne County at (209) 984-5489. Check out the HSTC's Adoption Process before you go. The adoption fee is $100, and that includes her sapy and current shots.
